Frequently asked questions

Question

Do I have to return my expired passport?

Answer

You do not need to send your passport if it has expired. However, a previous Canadian passport is accepted as supporting identification providing that all of the following conditions are met:

  • the passport is still valid or has expired within the past year;
  • the passport is submitted with the application form. Photocopies will not be accepted; and
  • the name indicated on the passport is the same as the one on the application form.

Note: If you are applying for the Simplified Passport Renewal Process you must enclose any Canadian passport issued to you within the last 6 years.
